Ásta Ólafsdóttir is born in Reykjavík in 1948. She graduated from Iceland College of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1978 and from the Jan van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands in 1984.
She has about 20 solo exhibitions behind, many group exhibitions and several awards. In autumn 2020, her works were exhibited in a solo exhibition on her career at the Living Art Museum.
Ásta was one of our first video artists (1981). She published her first prose book in 1981 and her published audio cassette is from 1982. She is versatile and has created her artworks in various materials i.a. silkscreens, bronze, sound works, mixed media installations, sculptures, photographs, published books, drawings, oil paintings and gouache.
Ásta work deals with time, relationships and communication that go beyond classification and closed systems. She considers art to be a tool to create and deepen emotions and increase our dimensions. She wants to peacefully test the interaction of all that is. Ásta has been an active participant in the field of art throughout her career. Her works are owned by Iceland‘s main art museums.
